Nothing is decided' - Have Schalke sacked Di Matteo?

The Italian failed to achieve Champions League qualification and looks to have subsequently paid the price after just seven months in charge.Schalke are reported to have sacked head coach Roberto Di Matteo, despite club chief Horst Heldt having previously suggested nothing is decided. The Gelsenkirchen side were beaten 2-0 by Hamburg on the final day of the Bundesliga season, meaning they finished the campaign in sixth place and failed to qualify for next season's Champions League.
That was at least enough to secure a Europa League spot, but should Borussia Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal next week and claim a European place then Schalke will face a play-off to qualify for the group stage.Consequently, numerous media outlets in Germany are reporting the club have opted to part ways with Di Matteo just seven months after his appointment, though Schalke chief executive Heldt had suggested nothing was set in stone when last asked. All who are responsible for the sporting side, be it the coach, the players, the sporting executive, everything has to be put on the table, he told reporters this weekend. Then we will make a decision. Nothing is decided yet.
Di Matteo - who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 - was named Jens Keller's successor in October but has overseen a mixed campaign Schalke impressed in reaching the last 16 of Europe's elite competition and were unfortunate to be knocked out by Real Madrid after winning 4-3 in the second leg at the Bernabeu. However, Di Matteo appears to have paid for his side's poor showing in the Bundesliga.
