Newcastle cancel end-of-season awards dinner

The club have deemed the charity fundraiser as "not appropriate" as they continue to battle against relegation with just two games left to play in the Premier League season.Newcastle United have opted to cancel their end-of-season awards gala due to their Premier League plight.John Carver's men sit fourth bottom in the table and are just two points clear of the relegation zone with two games remaining, having recently ended their eight-game losing streak by drawing 1-1 with West Brom.

With the season winding down, most clubs will be taking the opportunity to look back on the season at award ceremonies, but Newcastle have deemed a dinner at St James' Park in aid of the Newcastle United Foundation to be inappropriate in the current circumstances. An official club statement read: "Newcastle United Football Club has made the very difficult decision that in view of the current league position, it would not be appropriate for the team and coaching staff to be celebrating the season and collecting awards at a time when our only focus is on the next two games and securing Premier League status. The club would like to extend its apologies for any inconvenience caused to those businesses who had purchased tables to support the event, but we hope that you can appreciate our decision has not been taken lightly. The club will work with the Foundation to find another opportunity to support them to raise funds for their outstanding work, which engages with over 50,000 people in our community.Newcastle can secure survival with a win at QPR on Saturday providing Hull City fail to beat Tottenham.
