Mertens' condition 'does not look good'

The Lokeren defender was taken to hospital after losing consciousness during a reserve match and the club doctor admits his situation is critical.Lokeren club doctor Kris Peeters has admitted the prognosis for Gregory Mertens does not look good after the defender collapsed due to a heart problem.The 24-year-old lost consciousness during Lokeren's reserve game with Genk on Monday and was immediately rushed to hospital.The club confirmed shortly afterwards that the player's family were with him as he was placed on life support while in an induced coma.Peters told HNL.be: The hospital is doing everything they can. But we must be honest: it doesn't look good. For him and his family we hope that everything will start working again.The exact nature of Mertens' heart problem is unknown, though Lokeren say he had passed all pre-season health checks implemented by Uefa.Mertens, who joined Lokeren in the summer from Cercle Brugge, has made 15 Jupiler Pro League appearances this season.A number of footballers have voiced their concern for Mertens over the past 24 hours. Wolfsburg and Belgium playmaker Kevin De Bruyne wrote on Twitter: Unbelievably bad news, keep fighting, Gregory, while Everton's Romelu Lukaku also tweeted his support.
