The Magpies were first turned down by the Derby County boss at the start of the year and have now abandoned their interest after he rebuffed a new offer to replace John Carver.Newcastle United have given up on pursuing Steve McClaren after he rejected them for the second time since the turn of the year. The club made a move to land McClaren over the weekend, but the former England boss was uncertain about taking charge of a team in very real danger of relegation to the Championship with three games remaining.
Newcastle, under caretaker manager John Carver, have been dragged into the relegation battle following a run of eight consecutive defeats and are now just two points above the drop zone.Carver took charge following Alan Pardew's departure to Crystal Palace in January when talks with Remi Garde and McClaren revealed that neither were willing or able to commit to the club midway through the season. But with Derby County's season over as they slipped out of the Championship play-off places on the final weekend of the season, Newcastle believed McClaren was the ideal man to come in and secure their Premier League status. The deal fell through, though, with the ex-Middlesbrough man refusing to turn his back on his Pride Park employers.A Newcastle source has told Goal: They won't be back for him, the deal is dead in the water, the chances of them making him a third offer in the summer are very, very remote.McClaren never met with Newcastle officials on Tyneside, contrary to reports, but behind the scenes a deal had been teed up.
