Simeone resists urge to slam refereeing

Antoine Griezmann and Tiago were denied goals which appeared to be legitimate against Athletic Bilbao, but the Argentine thinks they would have drawn regardless.Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone resisted the urge to slam the refereeing in their controversial 0-0 draw with Athetic Bilbao on Saturday.Antoine Griezmann rightly had a goal disallowed for offside before half-time, but another effort from the Frenchman in the second half should have stood, while Tiago was also wrongly denied a winner for an incorrect offside call.

However, Simeone claims the result would have still been a draw even if the officials had not left the Vicente Calderon home fans fuming as Barcelona moved 11 points clear of them, meaning the reigning champions can definitely not defend their title.
I do not think that the result would have been any different if the calls had been made the other way," the Argentine told reporters. In the second half we played well - with great courage and we should have won the game - but we had to settle for a draw. I leave the ground assured that the team are continuing to compete and can achieve our goal of third place. The Rojiblancos are behind Barca and Real Madrid in the Primera Division standings on 76 points, with Valencia seven points behind them ahead of their clash with Eibar on Sunday.
