What a good day for football!' - FA chairman Dyke welcomes Blatter resignation

The Football Association chairman has admitted he is glad that the Fifa president has decided to step aside, and has called for a 'positive transformation' of the organisation.Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has “welcomed” Sepp Blatter’s decision to step down as Fifa president and hopes that reform will follow. The Swiss was re-elected as president amid allegations of “systemic” corruption within world football’s governing body on Friday, winning 133 of 209 votes. Blatter, though, stepped down at a hastily arranged press conference on Tuesday – just four days into his new term – and called an extraordinary congress “as rapidly as possible.Dyke announced before the election that England would consider a boycott of the World Cup if Blatter was re-elected, and has now moved to express his delight at the 79-year-old’s departure.
We welcome today’s announcement and believe it is good news for world football and Fifa,” a statement on the FA’s official website read.Change at the very top of FIFA is the necessary first step in delivering real reform of the organisation. We will now commit ourselves to play whatever role we can to support a positive transformation of FIFA for the benefit of all its members.Dyke also added that he believed Blatter's resignation was good news for the game around the world, but admitted he was shocked at the development. What a good day for football, he told Sky Sports News. I never thought he could sustain the position but even I'm shocked he went in four days.He was triumphant in Zurich, four days later he's gone. Who got him? Who shot him? That's the interesting question.I don't think he went for any sort of moral basis but I don't believe that's the man. Something has happened between then and now which meant he had to resign.Elections to replace Blatter are set to be held between December and March.
