Ranocchia on Liverpool's defensive shortlist

The out-of-favor Inter defender is on a list of possibilities as the Reds attempt to ease the impact of their injury crisis. Liverpool are extensively searching for solutions in the January transfer market to strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s options in defense, with Inter’s Andrea Ranocchia one of the players being looked at, Goal understands.Jurgen Klopp currently has no fully fit centre-backs at his disposal with Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren sidelined due to hamstring injuries, Mamadou Sakho nursing a minor knee problem, Kolo Toure trying to shake off cramp and Joe Gomez out for the season due to an ACL tear.Klopp admitted the club may need to turn to the winter window to reinforce his backline and Ranocchia, who is out of favor at Inter, is on a list of possibilities.

Liverpool are understood to have contacted the 27-year-old’s agent to assess his interest in moving to Merseyside on loan. However, Bologna have long been engaged in negotiations for Ranocchia, and the defender who has already shunned a switch to Norwich, could opt to remain in Italy. The former Nerazzurri captain has only made one start in Serie A this season, with 10 appearances in total as Roberto Mancini prefers the pairing of Jeison Murillo and Miranda.  Liverpool will also be looking beyond the 20-cap Italy international as they desperately seek to counter their injury crisis. Tiago Ilori, who is on loan at Aston Villa, is expected to have his temporary spell terminated and return to Merseyside. However, the 22-year-old is hugely inexperienced, did not play a minute for the Midlands club, and has never made an impact at Liverpool since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2013.
Klopp will want more surety at the heart of defense, but the manager who is “not the biggest friend of the January window” is well aware of how hard it is to find a quality player, who is surplus to requirements at his current club, in this market.
